Atoms and elements Flashcards
What is an element?
Something that is made up from only one type of atom
What does the number of protons equal?
The number of electrons
What happens if electrons are added or removed?
The atoms becomes charged and is then an ion
3 facts about electrons?
They move around the nucleus
They’re negatively charged
They occupy shells around the nucleus
3 facts about the nucleus?
It is in the middle of the atom
It contains protons and neutrons
Nucleus is positively charged due to protons
What is the mass number?
The total number of protons and neutrons
What is the atomic number?
Number of protons (or electrons)
What is the overall charge of an atom?
Equal
What happens if electrons are added or removed?
The atom becomes charged and is then an ion
What determines what type of atom it is?
The number of protons in the nucleus
What do elements with similar properties form in the periodic table?
Columns
What are the columns called?
Groups
What do all the elements in the same group have?
The same number of electrons I their outer shell
What are the properties of all group one elements?
All metals that react with water to form an alkaline solution and hydrogen
They all react with oxygen to form an oxide
The properties do group 0 elements have?
The noble gases
All have eight electrons in their outer shell shell making them stable and unreactive
