Electon Shells And Compounds Flashcards
What do electrons always occupy?
Shells sometimes known as energy levels
Which energy levels are always filled first?
The lowest energy levels (those closest to the nucleus)
How many electrons are allowed in each shell?
1st shell = 2
2nd shell and so on = 8
What do atoms prefer?
To have a full outer shell so if they don’t they react to fill it
What is a compound?
Two or more elements that are chemically bonded
How are compounds formed?
When different elements react together atoms form chemical bonds to other atoms forming compounds
What does making bonds involve?
The giving away, taking or sharing of electrons
What does a compound that is formed from a metal and a non metal consist of?
Ions
What happens to the metal and non metal atoms?
Metal atoms lose electrons to from positive ions
Non metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions
Th the opposite charge on the ionsnare strongly attracted and this is ionic bonding
What does a compound formed from non metals consist of?
Molecules
What is covalent bonding?
when each atom shares electrons with another atom
Each atom has to make enough covalent bonds to full its outer shell
