Properties of Materials Flashcards
What is elasticity
-Krystian S
The ability of a material to absorb force, bend and flex in different directions, returning to its original shape and size when loads are removed.
What is plasticity
-Krystian S
The ability of a material to be changed in shape by external blows or pressure, without cracking or breaking. Some materials are more plastic when heated
What is ductility
-Krystian S
The ability of a material to undergo cold plastic deformation by bending, twisting or stretching along its length (stretching/drawing) e.g Copper wire
What is compressive Strength
-Krystian S
The ability of a material to resist compressive (pushing) forces. e.g. Concrete.
What is malleability
-Krystian S
The ability of a material to be reshaped in all directions under pressure (e.g. hammering, pressing or rolling) without rupturing or cracking.
What is a property (in general)?
-Oscar Lawson
Characteristics possessed by a material making it better or worse suited to being used.
What defines a physical property?
-Oscar Lawson
Properties that are not associated with a force
What are examples of physical properties?
-Oscar Lawson
Thermal properties, density, fusibility, resistance to corrosion/electricity and ability to reflect light
What defines a mechanical property?
-Oscar Lawson
How a material behaves when subjected to a force
-Oscar Lawson
Give an example of a mechanical property
-Oscar Lawson
Strength, elasticity, hardness, toughness, compressive strength, tensile strength, malleability, ductility and plasticity
Out of Fusibility and Ductility, which is mechanical and which is physical ?
- Humphrey Marsh
Fusibility is Physical.
Ductility is Mechanical
Name two applications of Density:
- Humphrey Marsh
Fishing Weights and Buoyancy aids.
Which properties are not associated with a force?
- Humphrey Marsh
Physical Properties
Give the definition of ‘Strength’:
- Humphrey Marsh
The ability of a material to stand up to forces being applied without it bending, breaking, shattering or deforming in any way.
The best choice of material depends on what 4 factors?
- Humphrey Marsh
Its properties.
Its aesthetic qualities.
The cost of both material and production.
Its availability.
Are all Malleable materials ductile?
Caspar Tyser
Not all Malleable materials are ductile, but all ductile materials are malleable.
What is an example of something that has Compressive Strength?
Caspar Tyser
Concrete
Is Fiberglass a composite Material?
Caspar Tyer
Yes. (GRP is combined of glass strands with polyester resin.)
What is an example of something that has Tensile Strength?
Caspar Tyser
A steel Cable
Is Fusibility a Physical or Mechanical Property?
Caspar Tyser
It is a Physical property.
What is an applications of gold?
-Ssnehnil G
Jewellery
What is an application of plastics (generally)?
-Ssnehnil G
Window frames
What is an application of Tin?
-Ssnehnil G
Solder
What is an application of copper?
-Ssnehnil G
Electrical cables
