Properties of Living Things/ Animals Flashcards
What is Zoology?
Zoology is the study of animals.
What are the seven properties of living things?
Order, reproduction, growth and development, energy use, response to the environment, homeostasis, and evolutionary adaptation
What are the levels of order of living things?
From lowest to highest: protons, neutrons, electrons; molecules; organelles; cells; tissues; organs; organ systems; organisms; populations; species; communities; ecosystems.
Is DNA an ordered molecule?
Yes, yes it is
Why is DNA important?
It carries the instructions for creating a new individual; carries info for cell specialization; directs development.
What does it mean when we say all life has a universal genetic code?
The DNA of living things is made up of the same four nucleotides.
What is mutation?
Permanent change in the DNA sequence.
What is a taxis?
A specific response to environmental stimuli
What is geotaxis?
Specific response to gravity
What is thermotaxis?
Specific response to temperature
What is phototaxis?
Specific response to light
What is homeostasis?
Maintenance of an internal environment
What is evolution?
Change in gene frequencies over time
Through what mechanism does evolution work?
Evolutionary adaptation
What are the 6 characteristics unique to most animals?
1) multicellular, heterotroph 2) store carbohydrates as glycogen 3) lack cell walls
4) most animals have true nerve and muscle tissue
5) sexual reproduction
6) cleavage
