Cell Division and the Cell Cycle Flashcards
What are the three roles of cell division?
Reproduction, Growth and Development, Tissue renewal
What is mitosis?
cell division in which a parent cell divides once, giving rise to two daughter cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell and to each other.
What is a genome?
All DNA of the cell
What is a chromosome?
Strands of DNA that contain genes
What is a gene?
Sequence of DNA that codes for a particular protein product.
What is chromatin?
Strands of DNA and associated proteins; uncondensed chromosomes.
What is the difference between chromatin and a chromosome?
Chromatin are condensed chromosomes. Chromosomes are uncondensed,
What are sister chromatid?
replicated chromosome attached by a centromere.
What is a centromere?
region in which sister chromatid are attached.
What are the TWO phases of the cell cycle?
Interphase and Mitotic phase.
What are the three stages of interphase?
G1 phase: growth phase proteins and organelles produced, S phase: synthesis phase DNA is duplicated, G2 phase: continued growth
What are the two components of the mitotic phase?
mitosis and cytokinesis
What events are occurring during interphase?
growth,DNA duplication and more growth
What events are occurring in a cell during prophase?
chromosomes condense, mitotic spindle and asters form
What are centrioles?
nine triplets of short microtubules; organize spindle microtubule formation
