Properties of ionic compounds Flashcards
describe the structure of a giant ionic lattice
An ionic compound is a giant structure of ions. The ions have a regular, repeating arrangement called an ionic lattice. The lattice is formed due to electrostatic forces
list the properties of ionic compounds
- High melting and boiling points
- Don’t conduct electricity in a solid but do in a liquid or a gas.
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points
Because a lot of energy is needed to break through the electrostatic forces and the many strong bonds
Why do ionic compounds not conduct electricity in a solid
The ions are in a fixed position and therefore can’t carry the current. However when melted their ions are able to move and are free, therefore able to carry current
