chemical bonds Flashcards
1
Q
state the three types of strong chemical bonds
A
Ionic, Covalent and Metallic
2
Q
What is an ionic bond
A
When metals react with non-metals, electrons are transferred from the metal atoms to the non-metal atoms, forming ions. The resulting compound is called an ionic compound.
3
Q
What is a covalent bond
A
A covalent bond is formed when two atoms share a pair of electrons. Covalent bonding occurs in most non-metal elements, and in compounds formed between non-metals.
4
Q
What is a metallic bond
A
Metallic bonding is the attraction between the positive ions in a regular lattice and the delocalised electrons. Delocalised electrons are free to move throughout the whole structure.
