Propertiee of gases Flashcards
Gas
A substance that has no well defined boundaries but diffuses rapidly to fill any container in which it is placed
Charles law
That at constant pressure the volume of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to its temp on the Kelvin scale
Boyles law
That at constant temp the volume of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure
Gay lussacs law
When gases combine they do in simple number ratios when volumes are measured at the same temperature and pressure
Avagadros law
That equal volumes of gases contain equal numbers of molecules under the same conditions of temp and pressure
Molar volume
The volume occupied by one mole of any gas
Kinetic theory of matter
Solids
Have fixed volume and shape
Vibrate
Kinetic theory of matter
Liquids
Particles close together but loosely arranged
Flow do not have a fixed shape
Kinetic theory of matter
Gases
Particles are deprecated
Move rapidly and collide
No fixed shape/volume
Can be compressed
Assumptions of kinetic theory
Gases are made of particles in constant random motion
No attractive/repulsive forces between particles
Gas molecules are so small and widely separated that the actual volume of all the molecules is negligible compared with space they occupy
Limitations of kinetic theory
Polar molecules will have attractive forces between them
Under high pressure gas molecules will be crowded together so their volume will not be negligible compared to the distance between them
Ideal gas
A gas which obeys all gas laws for all temperatures and pressures
