What does it produce xs of?
Prolactin
What is the local effect of it?
Headache VF defect CSF leak (rare)
What type of VF defect may be present?
Bitemporal hemianopia
What are the sx due to?
Effects of increased prolactin
Name 4 sx
Female:
- Amenorrhoea
- Infertility
- Osteoporosis
- Galactorrhoea
Male:
- Low libido
- Low testosterone
- Impotence
- Galactorrhoea
What Ix would you do?
Serum prolactin levels
MRI - dx
What do you need to be aware of when measuring serum prolactin levels?
Pts taking anti-dopaminergic drugs as will have high prolactin
SO take careful hx
How is it mx?
Dopamine agonist
- Cabergoline, Bromocriptine
When do you do surgery?
Pts who can’t tolerate/ respond to medical Rx
Which surgery is performed, if indicated?
Trans-sphenoidal surgery
