Describe the physiological release of prolactin?

A

Prolactin is released from the anterior pituitary gland.

Dopamine is a primary prolactin releasing inhibitor. (Gate holding the horse in the stable)

What can cause a raised prolactin?

A
  • Prolactinoma
  • Pregnancy
  • Oestrogens
  • Physiological: stress, exercise, sleep
  • Acromegaly: 1/3 of patients
  • PCOS
  • Primary hypothyroidism (due to thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH) stimulating prolactin release)

  • Phenothiazines

  • Very rare: SSRIs, opioids
