What is the pathology of Bartter’s syndrome?
There is a defection in chloride absoprtion at the Na+K+2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC2) in the ascending loop of Henle.
Is Bartter’s syndrome associated with hypertensive hypokalaemia or normotensive hypokalaemia?
Normotensive hypokalaemia
What other endocrine conditions are associated with hypertensive hypokalaemia?
- Conn’s
- Cushings
- Liddle syndrome
What is an easy way of thinking of Bartter’s syndrome?
Loop diuretics work by inhibiting NKCC2 - think of Bartter’s syndrome as like taking large doses of furosemide in childhood
