Prokaryotic cells (power point) Flashcards
What is the function of a flagellum?
Movement
What is a prokaryotic cell’s cell wall made of?
Peptidoglycan
What is the function of the slime capsule?
It stores waste and protects against drying out.
What is a ribosome? ( Prokaryotic)
Site of protein synthesis, approximately 70S- smaller than in eukaryotes (80S).
What are pilli for?
For adhering to other cells- hosts or other prokaryotes for plasmid exchange.
What is the function of the plasma membrane?
Controls what enters and leaves the cell.
What is a plasmid?
Small loop of DNA containing additional genes.
What is a DNA loop?
Not linear as not wrapped around histone proteins to form chromosomes.
Where do chemical reactions happen in the cell?
In the cytoplasm
Where is ATP produced?
Mesosome
What don’t prokaryotic cells have?
Mitochondria Chloroplasts Nucleus Chromosomes Centrioles
What size are prokaryotic cells?
5um
What size are eukaryotic cells?
25um
What structures are outside the cell membrane of a prokaryotic cell?
All cell walls made of peptidoglycan
Slimy capsules
Often flagella
Pili
What structures are outside the cell membrane of a eukaryotic cell?
Plants: cellulose cell wall
Yeast/ fungi- chitin
No capsules
Undulipodia with different structure to flagella
