prokaryotic cells Flashcards
Differences between eukaryotic cell and prokaryotic
-cytoplasm that lacks membrane-bound organelles
-smaller ribosomes
-no nucleus; instead they have a single circular DNA molecule
that is free in the cytoplasm and is not associated with
proteins
-a cell wall that contains murein, a glycoprotein.
What is a virus
-Neither a prokaryote or eukaryote
-Acellular non-living particles
-Smaller than bacteria
Function of a Capsule
-Prevents bacteria from dessicating (drying out)
-Protects bacteria against the hosts immune system
How is a ribosome in a prokaryote different from the one in eukaryote
-They are smaller, 70s not 80s
Structure of DNA
-Singular circular DNA molecule free in the cytoplasm which isnt protein bound
What is a plasmid
-Small loops of DNA
-Can be shared between cells
-Ussualy contain useful genes e.g antibiotic resistance
What is a cell wall made of
-Murein
-Function of a flagellum
-Locomotion
Function of mesosome
-Increased surface area for respiration
What are the steps of Binary Fission
-replication of the circular DNA and of plasmids
-division of the cytoplasm to produce two daughter cells. each with a sinale cooy of the circular DNA and a variable number of copies of plasmids.
