Prokaryotes/bacteria Flashcards
Bacterial cells
~0.2-2.0 µm (small)
Monomorphic-single shape
Pleomorphic-many shapes
Bacillus (bacilli=plural)
rod shaped
Coccus
spherical shaped
Spiral
bacterial cell spiral arrangement
Diplobacilli
pair of bacilli
Gram-positive
Coccobacillus
intermediate of the cocci and bacillus shapes (oval)
Gram positive or negative
Streptobacilli
rod shaped, cells joined in a chain
Gram-negative
Fimbriae
hairlike appendages that allow for attachment
Pili
involved in motility (gliding and twitching)
Flagella
-Filamentous appendages external of the cell
-Propel bacteria
-Made up of flagellin protein
-Filament, hook, basal body
Taxis
move away or toward a stimuli
Escherichia coli O157:H7
causes a severe intestinal infection in humans
Axial Filaments
(aka endoflagella)
-Found in spirochetes (like a corkscrew)
Gram Negative bacteria
-protect from phagocytes, complement, antibiotics
-produce endotoxins
-low susceptibility to penicillin
Gram positive bacteria
-produce exotoxins
-highly susceptible to penicillin
-disrupted by lysozyme
