Microbial Metabolism Flashcards
Microbial metabolism
the buildup and breakdown of nutrients within a cell
Drug manufacturing
Penicillin, vaccine, vitamins, enzymes
Enzymes
act on a specific substrate; lower activation energy
-enzyme is unchanged after
-Lock & Key
Reaction rate
altered by enzymes, temperature, pressure, concentration
Factors Influencing Enzyme Activity
-Temperature
-pH
-Substrate concentration
-Inhibitors
(High temp and pH can denature proteins)
Saturated substrate
enzyme catalyzes at its maximum rate
37℃=peak enzyme activity
>37℃=decreased activity
Competitive Inhibitors
fill the active site of an enzyme and compete with the substrate
Noncompetitive Inhibitors
interact with the allosteric site of the enzyme (allosteric inhibition)
Feedback Inhibition
end-product of a reaction allosterically inhibits enzymes from earlier in the pathway, regulates amount
Oxidation-Reduction Reactions
oxidation:removal of electrons
reduction: gain of electrons
Redox reactions
oxidation reaction paired with a reduction reaction
(Kreb cycle, Electron Transport Chain)
Oxidative Phosphorylation
