Projected Terminology Flashcards
PROJECTILE
An object projected by an applied exterior Force.
continuing in motion by virtue of its own inertia / as a bullet / bomb shell / grenade
OGIVE
Curved or tapered front portion particularly on a projectile
BOURRELET
Cylindrical surface of a projectile
On which the projectile bears while in the bore of a weapon. conventionally the BOURRELET is located between the ogive and the body of the projectile and has a slightly larger diameter than the body. in some cases that extends the full length of the body where your diameter measurement should be taken.
CALIBER
The diameter of a projectile or the diameter of the bore of a gun or launching tube.
In rifled arms the calibers measured from land to land. Austin the caliber designation is based on a nominal diameter it represents a close approximation rather than an exact measurement expressed in millimeters or inches.
ROTATING BAND
Soft metal band around the projectile near its base which Sooners the projectile makes it fit tightly in the boar.
that's preventing The escape of gas and by engaging the rifling gives a projectile that spin.
BODY
Principal part of any object. The cylindrical portion of the projectile between the BOURRELET and the rotating band.
BOAT TAIL
conical section of the ballistic body that progressively decreases and diameter toward the tail to reduce overall aerodynamic drag.
The shape of the base of the projectile that is tapered or cone-shaped.
BASE
The remote section of a projectile.
Projectiles having a rotating band it is the section located to the rear thereof.
BASE PLATE
A metal plate forming the base closure of ordinance.
it may be threaded / cocked / crimped or welded to the base of the ordinance.
BASE EJECTION
descriptive term applied to ordinance in which provision is made for ejecting the contents through the base by internal Force.
adequate to remove the base plug and content simultaneously usually the force is applied by any spelling charge which is initiated by a fuse.
BURSTER TUBE
Explosive element used in chemical munitions to open the container and disperse the contents.
TRACER
Device that fits into or is attached to ordinance. it normally contains a starting mixture or a luminant and leaves a trail of flame or smoke to show the trajectory of the Ordnance.
CARTRIDGE
An explosive item designed to produce gaseous products or combustion under pressure for a spelling of projectile.
SABOT
a carrier for a sub caliber projectiles so that it may fit into a larger bore gun to carry is usually discarded after it is fired from the gun.
RIFLING
The spiraling grooves in a gun tube that create the spinning of the rounds.
The spinning of the munition keeps it from tumbling so it is more aerodynamic and travels further
