- by formulating one, you are working out what you need to focus on to make a successful product
- comprehensive market research may be conducted, to analyse competition and so that it can be generated to solve a problem
- target market needs to be established so they can examine potential buyers

- Must consider all design factors so that a product can be deemed successful.
- Clear limitations and parameters must be identified.

what is the purpose of market research?
- allows designers to identify target market + what opportunities exist so that product can be developped successfully
- analyse competition e.g existing designs
- identifies needs and wants of target market
what are the sources of data ?
primary reseach: conducted by going directly to the source e.g interviews, experimenting, statistics
secondary research: facts/data obtained from sources other than the original sources e.g books, people’s reports
demographics: section of population grouped according to common characteristics e.g age, gender
what are the 5 p’s in marketing
product, price, place, promotion, packaging, profit
describe marketing environments
- micro environment
forces that can impact performance of product in marketplace can be controlled internally by company
company, suppliers, customers, competitors - Macro environment: not controlled, marketer will read, interpre and use forces to advantage
forces: demographic trends, economic trends, natural environment trends, technoligcal trends, marketing decisions, cultural trends
what to consider when selecting appropriate resources
safety, whole life cycle, intellectial property (recognises ownership of a product of the intellect that has commercial value including copyrighted property), personal skills, access to specialists (available technologies)
developing + demonstrating proficiency in using resources
- tools etc never used before = learn how to use correctly and safely
-proficiency begins with determining risks involved + developing expertise to achieve desired outcome , part of developing quality project
Laws to ensure safe practices
NSW: SafeWork NSW - aims to achieve safe workplaces, effecitive return to work and security for injured workers
- promotes safer/healther workplace
Work Health and Safety Act 2011
- protects health, safety and welfare of all employees, employers, and self employed people
- aims to address increasing rates of injuries + illnesses
Australian Standard: safety-related guidleines that products must adhere to before being sold
ways to ensure safe practices
- training
-risk assessment (analyse task + assess various risks + likelihood of it occuring - develop control measures - best practice (rules/guidelines)
- aim: eliminate accidents
