Arguments for prohibition?
Drinking was said to encourage the spread of communism after the Russian Revolution
WW1 drinkers were accused of being unpatriotic cowards - most breweries were ran by Germans immigrants who were portrayed as the enemy
Supporters of prohibition claimed drinking cause lawlessness
How was prohibition successful?
in 1929, 50 million litres of illegal alcohol had been destroyed
The consumption of alcohol fell and stayed down until 1971 when the levels matched 1914
How was prohibition a failure?
Drinking continued and there was not enough law enforcement to stop it.
The trade just went “underground” with speakeasies, moonshine and bootlegging.
Many ordinary people became criminals.
Moonshine was not to good enough standards and killed people - “Jackass Brandy” cause internal bleeding
Gangsterism became popular and highly profitable, leading to an increase in violence and police ‘turning blind eyes’.
When did prohibition end?
1933 the 21st Amendment abolished prohibition
