A

-silver production has grown rapidly in the USA after the discovery of silver in Nevada
-Dime,mentalist felt that silver should be used in production of coinage as well as gold, in 1890, the Sherman silver act forced the government to purchase 4,500,000 of silver each month at market price
-However in 1896 Grover Cleveland attempted to solve economic problems caused by depression, selling government securities for gold

-Prices for producers were falling terribly
-high tariffs on foreign manufactured goods meant foreigners would not buy American agriculture produce

-one of the democrats aims for the election was anti-gold/ Dimementalist which was one of the populist policies
- they had 2 choices: either side with the democrats so one of their policies would be put in place or not support them so majority votes would go to republicans

-argued that Roosevelt was the 1st president to realise that natural recourses were not infinite. He organised 150 million acres of forest to be placed on federal reserves and strictly enforced laws concerning grazing, mining and lumbering
-in 1908 Roosevelt called the national conservation conference which led to many states creating commissions to look after the environment

A

-Roosevelt was on a Safari trip when he heard about Tafts reluctance to carry out further reform, Rooevselt returned to America to act as an opponent to Taft.
-in 1911 Roosevelt wanted to run against Taft but he controlled the party machine and could control the conventions
-Roosevelt claimed that the republicans party no longer supported his views in 1912 and started his own party the progressives

A

-1892, carnige steel and steel worker unions were in disagreement over wages
-Carnage would pretend to be in support of workers but would do anything to get rid of workers unions. Henry Clay Frick proposed that wages would be cut until steel prices increased
- in response the workers went on strike, setting up patrols to look for strike breakers
-by 1893 state military arrived in town to enact marital law which enabled strikers to come in

A

-1893, big boss George Pullman who made his money through selling steeper cars
-Pullman cut employers wages but kept rent the same in an attempt to keep,profits after depression in 1873
-in response the workers went on wild cat strike which was supported by the American railway union
-1/4 million people workers responded to the strike
-Railway owners responded by calling in government assistance. President Cleveland agreed to bring in troops, brought in an act that banned strikes till 1930s

-in 1892 Homer Plessy challenged the Louisiana state law on railroad carriage’s, being arrested
-the case got send to Supreme Court as Judge Ferguson pleas against Plessy, saying that the 14th amendment only applied to state and federal organisations not individuals and organisations

-After 3 weeks of fighting 379 soldiers died and 5,000 suffered from yellow fever
