Mental programming =
= Culture software for the mind (CULTURAL IDENTITY)
Three levels of mental programming?
- Individual behaviour - DNA and learned (every person)
- Cultural behaviour - Programmed and learned (groups)
- Universal behaviour - DNA (all people)
Example of three levels
Universal - eating
Cultural - express in the norms: knife and fork or family time
Individual - express as a person: Preferences
Subcultures
Cultural identities formed from the groups which people grow up and live
Expressed in tangible matters like clothing (football strips)
Identities
They are built from a persons various subcultures which are expressed in tangible forms
A subculture is only a sub culture if…
- Partly identities with it (faithfully)
2. Makes values of the subculture his own and endorses them
Why do we work with Country cultures?
- Avoid miscommunication between cultures
- Be aware and prepared for what to expect from culture differences
- Can stay up to date from country statistic information
Risks of country cultures…
- Not aware of different inner country cultures (languages and lifestyle)
- Stereotyping
How do we measure country cultures?
- Hall - communication
- Lewis - communication and values
- Hofstede - work related management styles
- Kluckhohn - Universal dilemas
Risks of stereotyping
sterotyping is not good or bad in itself
- Group cultural characteristics are projected onto one person
- Cultural glasses on always
- Leads to prejudice - over-zelous and negative sterotyping
Advantages of stereotyping
sterotyping is not good or bad in itself
- Helps form an idea to be prepared
- order to complcated cultural differences
- Provides information about people and their culture
