Prognosis Flashcards
Lang prognosis for:
A tooth with extensive root caries
Doubtful
Kwok and canton 2007 prognosis for a tooth with furcation involvement and recurrent periodontal abscess
Questionable
Kwok and caton 2007 prognosis for tooth with periapical pathology and horizontal bone loss involving >2/3 of root. Patient has diabetes that cannot be controlled
Unfavourable. Systemic factor cannot be controlled hence periodontal breakdown likely to occur even with comprehensive perio treatment ad maintenance
Prognosis (lang + Kwok and caton) for a tooth with vertical root fracture
Irrational to treat (lang)
Hopeless (Kwok and caton)
When is prognosis given
Diagnostic (baseline before treatment)
Therapeutic (post treatment )
Hirschfield and wasserman 1978 prognosis system
Questionable prognosis factors: furcation involvement persistent deep probing depth despite root planing extensive alveolar bone loss marked mobility + deep probing depth
But concluded that questionable prognosis factors not accurate in predicting tooth loss
What did Becker et al 1984 conclude about perio prognosis
Prognosis given at baseline only accurate if patient come back for regular maintenance
Lack of perio maintenance/poor patient compliance can influence long term prognosis
