As the new C – watch Sgt, you are completing an annual performance appraisal (CHP 118). As well as the officers monthly CHP 100 forms and observe numerous comments about late reports and frequent tardiness. Prior to completing the annual appraisal, you speak to the officer regarding his substandard performance. While speaking to the officer, she seems disenchanted and does not seem to care. As you continue talking, she confides in you that she is having personal relationship issues, as well as financial issues, and does not know what to do. Describe what actions you would take.

You are assigned as A – watch sergeant and while working in the field you are called to a roadside meeting w/ one of your officers. When you meet the officer he says that as he left the office, at the beginning of shift, he saw Officer Smith and Jones (male and female who have a dating relationship) kissing and embracing passionately in the back lot. He does not wish to file a complaint about it and thinks this conduct is inappropriate for the workplace. Explain how you would handle the situation.

An Officer assigned to my shift is performing at a substandard level in enforcement activity & report completion for the last two months. His enforcement activity in significantly below the shift average, with no apparent extenuating circumstances. Last month, another Sgt addressed the subpar activity by entering a comment on his 100 form but the officer’s activity is again significantly substandard this month. Explain what steps you would take in dealing with this problem.

One of your officers has asked for Friday afternoon off to attend his child’s sporting event, but you have to deny it due to MEP weekend staffing set at 80%. On Friday he calls in sick to dispatch while your in the field. How do you handle the situation?
