Professional Responsibilities and Concerns Flashcards
What are the 7 responsibilities of instructor?
- Personal liability coverage
- Training and certification
- CPR and first aid training
- Facility pre-exercise participation screening
- Medical clearance and pre-existing testing
- Environmental monitoring
- Emergency response procedures
Define Par-Q
Physical readiness questionnaire recommended by ACSM as the minimum standard for use by entry-level participants in a moderate-intensity exercise program
Medical Clearance Recommendations for high-risk participants
high-risk participants: people with one or more major cardiovascular and pulmonary disease signs or symptoms or diagnosis of cardiovascular, pulmonary or metabolic cease should have a medical exam, medical clearance and exercise testing before participating in moderate to vigorous exercise
Medical Clearance Recommendations for moderate-risk participants
moderate-risk participants: men 45 or older, women 55 or older, or those with 2 or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease should have a medical exam and clearance.
Medical Clearance Recommendations for low-risk participants
Low-risk participants: in most cases women under 55 and men under 45 who are asymptomatic and have no more than one risk factor for cardiovascular disease do not need medical clearance
List 11 exercise danger signs (participants should STOP exercise and the instructor should assess the need for emergency response procedures)
- nausea/vomiting
- dizziness, lightheadedness, unusual fatigue
- tightness or pain in chest
- loss of muscle control/staggering
- severe breathlessness with inability to recover
- allergic reactions
- blurred vision
- acute illness
- mental confusion
- cyanosis (bluish coloring of the skin)
- acute musculoskeletal injury
List 5 signs or participants complaints that would require exercise modification or cessation of exercise (not emergency response) until the signs disappear
- labored breathing
- excessive HR elevation
- evidence of strain (holding breath, redness)
- musculoskeletal pain
- lack of proper body control
What should an instructor know about the effects of drugs and/or medications on exercise response?
That certain prescription and non-prescription medications can elicit side effects similar to those listed above. Some can alter HR response. Individuals on medications should check with physician before participating in moderate/vigorous exercise
What 4 things should instructor do in case of emergency?
- survey the scene
- assess the person in need of attention
- 911
- provide appropriate cate until EMS arrives
List the symptoms of overtraining
- fatigue
- anemia
- amenorrhea (no menstrual cycle)
- overuse/stress-related injuries
- increased resting HR
- slower recovery of HR
- Decrease in strength performance
- constant soreness to the point of pain
List AFAA recommendations to avoid overtraining
- vary class type and intensity
- limit number of high impact classes
- always adequately warm up and cool down
- limit active demonstration by using verbal cueing and assistants
- nutritious, adequate diet
- be aware of and correct muscle imbalances
- vary muscle conditioning exercises
- keep class format well-balanced
In terms of hydration and rehydration AFAA recommends
- 8-10 ounces of water prior to exercise
- 3-4 ounces every 20 minutes
- 16 ounces for each lb. of weight lost during exercise
- cool water is best if the workout is less than 90 minutes
describe the appropriate exercise attire that AFAA recommends
- fabrics that breathe, rather than retain body heat
- comfortable clothing that doesn’t hinder movement
- shoes with proper design, support and cushioning
According to AFAA, a group exercise instructor should generally teach at what class level?
Intermediate- while giving modifications for more and less intense variations. (since participants generally mimic the instructor, will need to go back and forth)
Continuing Education
AFAA requires 15 units of continuing ed. (CEU’s) every 2 years
1 AFAA course every 2 years
