  • attending behavior
    • empathetic attitude, encouragement for the client to speak, patience, physically & psychologically orientating yourself to the environment
  • closed & open-ended questions
    • questions that need a response more than yes / no, socratic questioning, closed questions to get a specific answer
  • paraphrasing comments
    • conveys listening, encourages elaboration, checks accuracy of message, crystallizes communication
  • summarizing comments
    • collection of two or more paraphrases or subjective responses that condenses the communication, covers more material & longer period of the clients discussion, good to start, pace, end, review or transition within sessions
  • reflection
    • verbal response to client emotion/s, aids clients to feel understood, express deeper feelings, manage feelings & identify differences between feelings

  • linguistic
    • actual words, phrases & metaphors used to convey feelings
  • paralinguistic
    • not words themselves, but timing, accent, volume, pitch, etc
  • non-verbal
    • body language or facial expressions, use of gestures, body position or movement, proximity or touch in relation to the nurse
