- attending behavior
- empathetic attitude, encouragement for the client to speak, patience, physically & psychologically orientating yourself to the environment
- closed & open-ended questions
- questions that need a response more than yes / no, socratic questioning, closed questions to get a specific answer
- paraphrasing comments
- conveys listening, encourages elaboration, checks accuracy of message, crystallizes communication
- summarizing comments
- collection of two or more paraphrases or subjective responses that condenses the communication, covers more material & longer period of the clients discussion, good to start, pace, end, review or transition within sessions
- reflection
- verbal response to client emotion/s, aids clients to feel understood, express deeper feelings, manage feelings & identify differences between feelings

- not words themselves, but timing, accent, volume, pitch, etc
