Products from oil Flashcards
Cracking
The reaction used in oil industry to break down large hydrocarbons into smaller, more useful ones. This occurs when the hydrocarbon vapour is either passed over a hot catalyst or mixed with steam and heated to a high temperature.
Alkene
Unsaturated hydrocarbon which contains a carbon-carbon double bond. The general formula is C2H2 for example Ethene.
Unsaturated hydrocarbon
A hydrocarbon whose molecules contain at least one carbon-carbon double bond.
Double-bond
A covenant bond made by the sharing of two pairs of electrons.
Polymer
A substance made from very large molecules made up of many repeating units, for example, poly(ethene)
Monomer
Small reactive Molecules that react together in repeating sequences to form a very large molecule (a polymer).
Polymerisation
The reaction of monomers to make a polymer.
Ethene
An alkene
Propene
An alkene
Smart polymer
Polymers that change in response to changes in their environment.
Biodegradable
Materials that can be broken down by microorganisms.
Fermentation
The reaction in which the enzymes in yeast turn glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
