Metals and their uses Flashcards
ore
Rock which contains enough metal to make it economically worthwhile to extract the metal.
Reactivaity Series
A list of elements in order of their reactivity. The most reactive element is put at the top of the list.
Reduction
A reaction in which oxygen is removed (or electrons are gained).
Blast furance
The huge reaction vessels used in industry to extract iron from ore.
Cast iron
The impure iron taken directly from a blast furnace.
Steel
An alloy of iron with small amounts of carbon or other metals, such as nickel and chromium, added.
Alloy
A mixture of metals (and sometimes non-metals). For example, Brass is a mixture of Copper and Zinc.
Stainless steel
A chromium-nickel alloy of steel which does not rust.
Aluminium
A low density, corrosion-resistant metal used in many alloys, including those used in aircraft industry.
Titanium
A shiny, corrosion-resistance metal used to make alloys.
Copper-rich ore
Rock that contains a high proportion of a copper compound.
Smelting
Heating a metal ore in order to extract its metal.
Phytomining
The process of extraction of metals from ores using plants.
Bioleaching
Process of extraction of metals from ores using microorganisms.
Displace
When one element takes the place of another in a compound. For example, iron+ copper sulfate (arrow) iron sulfate + copper.
