Production Types Flashcards
The definition of modular production
A group of workers who set their own standards and work together to produce a product, meaning that the team is fully responsible for the quality.
Advantages of a modular production ?
Leads of cost savings
Flexible with production changes
More efficient
Fewer sources requirements
Disadvantages of modular production?
More communication needed
Workers must co-operate fully
One worker not in halts the entire production
No rhythm or pace-setting
Definition of assembly line?
Products that are assembled on production lines. Parts are added as the semi- finished assembly moves form workstation to workstation where parts are added in sequence until the final assembly is produced.
The definition of mass production?
The manufacturing of large quantities of identical outcomes, often using an assembly line or automation technology.
Who developed the assembly line of mass production and what else their to know about it?
Henry Ford (founder of Ford Motor co.)
The reduced manufacturing time for parts allowed the company to reduce the time it took to build the Model T automobile.
By doing this, it meant that more cars were being made quickly.
As a result of Ford’s mass production , cars became something that the general public could afford, rather than them being luxury items.
Advantages of mass production?
High level of precision- stringently monitored
Lower costs- less workers
Identical outcomes
Higher level of efficiency- continuously completing the same task
Non- skilled jobs
Competitive advantage - prompt distribution
Disadvantages of mass production?
Employees may lack motivation- repetitive tasks
Setup costs are high
Quality decline- shear volume of items are too much to stop defects and errors
Lack of innovation
Inflexibility to consumer demand
The definition of batch production?
A method of manufacturing where products are made as specified groups or amounts within a time frame.
Typically very labour intensive with the use of jigs and formers to ensure quality control.
Advantages of batch production?
Cost-effectiveness - companies can take advantage of scale, bulk purchasing.
Flexibility - production can stop if it sells poorly and adjust productions on demand fluctuations.
Better quality control - less products so easier to closely monitor
More expensive to purchase
Disadvantages of batch production?
High initial setup costs
Risk of lost time - machines breaking down resulting in the whole batch being affected.
Longer lead times - setting up takes time
Higher labour costs
What is unit/one-off production?
A product that is made one at a time.
E.g bridges, oil rigs, cruise ship
Advantages of unit/one-off production?
Customisable
High quality
Uniqueness
Expensive
Disadvantages of unit/one-off production?
Labour intensive
Highly skilled workers
Time-consuming
Expensive
