Industrial Manufacturing Principles Flashcards
The definition for Total Quality Management (TQM)?
A customer focussed approach using the eight principles striving for perfection.
The definition of cell production?
A manufacturing approach where the flow production line is divided into a number of self-contained units called cells. A product is built and packaged within a small group of workers.
Advantages of cell production?
Greater job satisfaction
Better quality products
Repetitive job
Greater efficiency
Disadvantages of cell production?
Labour costs are high
Requires up-skilled, trained workers
The definition of repetitive flow production?
A product that is produced continuously 24/7 with automated machine systems. The materials are bought in bulk.
Advantages of repetitive flow production?
Error free
Efficient
Disadvantages of respective flow production?
Costly to install
Costly to setup
What is JIT?
Just in time production.
The definition of JIT?
A management strategy they makes sure that a company only has enough stock/materials that are required for immediate use to save space.
Advantages of using JIT?
Prevents over-production
Reduces transportation costs
Little wastage
Holding no surplus materials
Saves storage
Saves handling time
Spends less money on materials
Disadvantages of using JIT?
More planning is required
Relies heavily on suppliers
One delay can halt production
Could be a shortage of materials
Difficult to adapt to sudden surges or enhances in customer demand
The definition of progressive bundle system?
A traditional production approach, where each worker receives a bundle of incomplete products to perform a single operation on each product in the bundle.
