Production Methods Flashcards
job production (customised production)
customising an individual product from start to finish and tailor made to meet specific requirements of the client
batch production
simultaneously producing a number of identical products
mass production
manufacturing large amounts of a standardised product
flow production
form of mass production that uses continuous and progressive processes, carried out in sequence
mass customisation
uses flexible manufacturing systems to mass produce products that meet individual consumer needs and wants
pros of job production
high quality, high motivation of workers, flexibility when planning, unique & adds value, creates variety of choices for customers
cons of job production
labour intensive, time consuming, long working capital cycle, expensive, diseconomies of scale due to irregular orders
pros of batch production
economies of scale due to large quantity produced, specialisation increases motivation & quality, reduce risks of producing just a single product with limited sales potential
pros of mass/flow production
large volumes of output, cost-effective, standardised quality due to use of dedicated machinery, low labour costs
cons of mass/flow production
boring & decreases motivation, limited choice of products (standardisation), capital intensive (high setup & replacement costs), inflexible
pros of mass customisation
low unit costs, flexibility of individual customisation of product
cons of mass customisation
troubles in forecasting trends, higher costs to maintain variety of machinery, cannot build up stock ahead of time
