Processing stream/Connection types Flashcards
Different types of processing streams are found
within and between circuits (in a neural network)
Degree of convergence and divergence in connectivity is important in what?
in regions of the nervous system containing complex circuits comprised of large numbers of neurons (neocortex)
Divergence
refers to the degree to which a neuron projects input to a large number of target neurons via axon collaterals
- Can also refer to the ability of one neurotransmitter to activate more than one r/c subtype
Convergence
refers to the degree to which a neuron receives input from a large number of other neurons
- Can also be applied to the ability of different neurotransmitters to converge to affect same circuit or network
Simpler definitions of divergence vs convergence?
Diverge = one signal to many targets Converge = many signals to one target
Types of circuits?
Hierarchical and Local
Hierarchical circuit (sub types)
Each level is regulated by local circuits and all three types of processing occur within the circuit
-Serial, parallel, and reciprocal processing
Serial processing
info flows from one area to another in sequence
Parallel processing
info flows in a “side by side” manner
Reciprocal processing
info flows back and forth
Local circuit
Found within the hierarchical circuits and alter the processing at each hierarchical level –> can determine the info that is passed down to the next stage
What are included in local circuits?
Feed-forward and feedback connections
-Excitatory and inhibitory connections
