Processes of memory. Flashcards
What is encoding?
Changing information so it can be held in the brain
What is visual encoding?
Changing information by how it looks
Acoustic encoding
Encoding via sound
Semantic encoding
Encoding via meaning
Other encoding
Tactile encoding - memory of what things are like to touch
Olfactory encoding - Memory for smell
Storage
Holding memories so they can be retrieved later.
Retrieval
Locating and bringing back information into STM
Types of retrieval
Recognition - identifying from options
Cued Recall - Locating information with a clue
Free recall - without clues.
Baddeley’s study
Aim - to see whether there was a difference in using the STM or LTM
Method - Participants learnt words similar or dissimilar sounding. They immediately recall the info.
Results - Similar sounding words were badly recalled in
STM, words with similar meanings were badly encoded in LTM.
Conclusion - This shows the STM is encoded acoustically and the LTM is semantically.
Types of LTM
Episodic memory - Memory from events in your life
Semantic memory - Memory in what things mean
Procedural memory - Memory of how we do things.
Declarative and non-declarative - Declarative is episodic and semantic and non-declarative is procedural
