Language thought and communication Flashcards
Is there a relationship between language and thought?
Piagets theory; He believed language depends on thought. Evidence: thought is exhibited in infants who cannot speak yet.
The effect of language and thought in our views of the world
Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis: thinking depends on language (SWH = The structure of language determines a native speakers perception and categorization of experience
Variation in the recall of events
Variation in the recognition of colours eg: native american cultures
Differences between human and animal communcation
Limited functions of animal communications - limited to survival, reproduction, territory and food
Karl Von Frisch’s Bee study - Bees communicate by ‘‘waggling’’ Frisch discovered the meaning behind the bees dance and many other communication facts about bees
Properties of human commuinication - language, more complex communications - are not present in animals
Non verbal Communication
Non verbal communication – transmission of messages through a non verbal platform such as eye signals or hand movements
Verbal communication
Communication through language and audible signals
Function of eye contact
Regulating the flow of conversation, signalling attraction and expressing emotion.
Body language
NVC that we subconsciously do and read from others.
Attraction - Open body language, increased touch with other person.
We imitate others to learn or to build rapport
Explanations of NV Behaviour
Darwins evolutionary theory of non verbal communication as evolved and adaptive
Evidence that non verbal behaviour is inate eg: in neonates and the sensory deprived.
Evidence supporting Non verbal bevaiour is learnt - eye contact is used to help conversation - learnt at the same time we learn to use language, learnt through social interactions
Yukis study of emoticons - eastern populations had learnt to read someone through their eyes whereas western culture learnt through facial expressions and the mouth.
