Differences between human and animal communcation

A

Limited functions of animal communications - limited to survival, reproduction, territory and food
Karl Von Frisch’s Bee study - Bees communicate by ‘‘waggling’’ Frisch discovered the meaning behind the bees dance and many other communication facts about bees

Properties of human commuinication - language, more complex communications - are not present in animals

Explanations of NV Behaviour

A

Darwins evolutionary theory of non verbal communication as evolved and adaptive

Evidence that non verbal behaviour is inate eg: in neonates and the sensory deprived.

Evidence supporting Non verbal bevaiour is learnt - eye contact is used to help conversation - learnt at the same time we learn to use language, learnt through social interactions
Yukis study of emoticons - eastern populations had learnt to read someone through their eyes whereas western culture learnt through facial expressions and the mouth.
