process of wave-cut not & formation of spits Flashcards
What is the process of a wave cut notch?
- sea erodes at the base of the cliff.
- Hydraulic action & Abrasion hits the base of the cliff causing a wave cut notch to be formed.
- Over time the wave cut notch becomes steeper.
- the weight of the cliff will not be supported
- Cliff collapse leaving behind a wave cut platform.
What is the process of a spit
- waves pick up eroded material transported along the beack zigzag due to LSD.
- At a bend in coastline deposition begins
- sediment built out & long ridge built out to sea.
- mud & marsh warpped in water behind the spit.
- end of spit is affected by strong wind, curves into a hook.
Causes of coastal flooding.
Isostatic changes
Isostatic changes make it seem that sea level is rising quickly causing floods.
Wave cut-notch
Explain what a wave cut notch is.
A wave cut notch is a small hollow base of the cliff created by erosion from waves
Wave-cut platform
Explain what a wave-cut platform is.
A flat, rocky area that is left behind when cliff retreats due to erosion.
Wav cut platform
Explain the formation of a wave-cut platform.
- Once wave-cut notch is formed, the cliff above it becomes unstable and eventually collapses.
- As the cliff erodes and collapses, the cliff face retreats inland, leaving behind a flat, rocky area at the base pf thr cliff.
- This flat area is a wave-cut platform usually visible at low tide and submerged at high tide.
Beach
Explain what a beach is.
A beach is a landform made up of sand, pebbles and other sediment that accumalte along the coastline
Beach
Explain the formation of a beach.
- Beaches form when waves carry material like sand and pebbles from the sea and deposit them on the shore.
- Constructive waves (Have a strong swash and weak backwash) push this material up onto the beach.
- overtime more material build up creating a beach
Spit
Define Spit.
A spit is a long narrow strip of land made of sand or shingle that extends from the coast into the sea, often curving at its end.
