Process of Erosion and Transportation (Rivers) Flashcards
What are the four process of Erosion in a river?
1) Hydraulic Action
2) Attrition
3) Abrasion
4) Solution
What is meant by Hydraulic Action?
The force of the water hitting the river beds and banks, most effective when higher river velocity.
What is meant by Attrition?
When stones carried by the river knock against each other, wearing them down, making the stones smaller and rounder.
What is meant by Abrasion?
When the load of the river repeatedly hits against the beds and banks dislodging particles.
What is meant by Solution?
When the river flows over the limestone or chalk, the rock is slowly dissolved.
What are the four process of Transportation in a river?
1) Traction
2) Saltation
3) Suspension
4) Solution
What is meant by Traction?
Large boulders and rocks are rolled along the river bed.
What is meant by Saltation?
Small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed.
What is meant by Suspension?
Fine light material is carried along in the water.
What is meant by Solution?
minerals are dissolved in the water and carried along in solution.
This typically occurs in areas where the underlying bedrock is limestone
