Process design - resources Flashcards
Why is a detailed design of the process important?
It is important because process performance also affects the performance of the whole operation
What is the whole point of process design?
To make sure that the performance of the process is appropriate for whatever it is trying to achieve
What is process mapping? What is its purpose?
Describing a process in terms of how the activities within the process relate to each other. The purpose of mapping is to improve understanding of a process, identify areas for improvement
What is the next stage of analyzing the process after process mapping?
To understand the nature of, and the relationships between its throughput time, cycle time and work in progress.
Explain throughput time
Is a measure of the time it takes for a product or service to move through a process, from start to finish.
Explain cycle time
Is a measure of the total time it takes o complete a single unit of a product or service from start to finsih. It includes only the time spent on the actual production process, and does not include any waiting or transportation time
Explain work in progress
The number of items within the process at any point in time
What is Little’s law? Explain
Little’s law is a fundamental principle in operations management tha describes the relationship between the number of items in a system, the arrival rate of items and the time spent in the system
What is percentage throughput efficiency?
A useful metric for measuring the performance of a production process and identifying opportunities for improvement
What does bottleneck mean? Explain
A stage in a production process that has a lower capacity or processing cabability than the rest of the process.
The flow of the work is slowed down because the capacity of the process is not enought o keep up with the demand
