Lateral Canthotomy
Indications in trauma: proptosis, IOP > 40 mm Hg, visual acuity loss
Contraindication: suspected globe rupture
Sever inferior crus first
If IOP remains ↑, sever superior crus
When is the most appropriate time to attempt rust ring removal?
Over 24–48 hours, the rust ring will oxidize and kill surrounding epithelium.
At this time, the rust ring will be soft and easily removed in one solid plug.
Once shoulder dystocia is recognized during delivery, you should do what?
the mother’s legs should be hyperflexed and pulled up by the abdomen (McRoberts maneuver) and firm suprapubic pressure applied
A summary of cricothyrotomy steps includes:
1) Prepare the skin with antiseptic solution
2) Locate cricothyroid membrane
3) Make a vertical incision in the midline through the skin and subcutaneous tissues
4) Dilate the cricothyroid membrane
5) Place a 6.0 cuffed endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube and inflate.
What is most likely to happen to an implantable cardioverter defibrillator with placement of a magnet over the device?
Defaults to pacemaker mode
Most ICDs will resume anti-tachycardia therapy once the magnet is removed.
