abdominal perineal resection
includes the resection of the sigmoid colon, rectum and anus and the construction of a permanent end colostomy
amniocentesis
a test you may be offered during pregnancy to check if your baby has a genetic or chromosomal condition, such as downs syndrome, Edwards syndrome or pataus syndrome/ involves removing and testing a small sample of cells from amniotic fluid
amputation
the loss or removal of a body part
anastomose/ anastomosis
in surgery connects two body channels together, such as blood vessels or part of your intestines/ surgeons crate a new anastomosis after removing or bypassing part of a channel, or after removing or replacing an organ that was connected to a channel
arthroplasty, total joint
a surgery to replace a damaged joint with an artificial joint/ usually replace the entire joint
cauterization
to destroy tissue using a hot or cold instrument, an electrical current or a chemical that burns or dissolve the tissue

the surgical delivery of a bay through a cut made in the mothers abdomen and uterus

an exam used to look for changes, such as swollen, irritated tissues, polyps or cancer-in the large intestine rectum

connects the last part of the small intestine to the abdominal wall/ liquid stool

a procedure that can help save a life when someone can’t breathe. uses a laryngoscope to guide an endotracheal tube into the mouth or nose, voiecbox then trachea, the tube keeps the airway open

surgery to remove a breast
needle biopsy
a procedure to obtain a sample of cells from your body for laboratory testing/ used to take tissue or fluid samples from muscles, bones, and other organs such as the liver or lungs
nephrectomy
surgical removal or one or both of the kidneys
pancreaticoduidenectomy
a complex operation to remove the head of the pancreas, the first part of the small intestine, the gallbladder and the bile duct/ “Whipple procedure”
resect
the cut out (tissue or part of an organ)/ surgery to remove tissue or part or all of an organ
salpingo-oophorectomy
surgical removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries
salpingoplasty
plastic surgery of a Fallopian tube
tracheostomy
an opening created at the front of the neck so a tube can be inserted into the windpipe (trachea) to help you breathe
