diagnostic tests Flashcards
angiography (cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal)
examination by x-ray or blood or lymph vessel
arthroscopy
procedure for diagnosing and treating joint problems/ surgeon inserts a narrow tube attached to a fiber-optic video camera through small incision- view inside your joint
barium enema/ lower GI series
x-ray exam that can detect changes or abnormalities in the large intestine
bone marrow biopsy
involves removing a small sample of the bone marrow inside your bones for testing
bronchoscopy
a procedure that lets doctors look at your lungs and air passages/ a thin tube is passed through your nose or mouth down your throat and into your lungs
cerebrospinal fluid analysis/ lumbar puncture
you lie on your side with your knees drawn up to your chest, then a needle is inserted into your spinal canal, in your lower back, to collect cerebrospinal fluid for testing/ used to diagnose certain health conditions
cholangiogram
an imaging technique that uses a contrast dye that is injected into the bile ducts to view ducts on X-ray
percutaneous transhepatic
a way of looking at your bile ducts using X-ray/ doctor puts a long thin needle through the skin and into your liver and bile ducts
colonoscopy
an exam used to look for changes, such as swollen, irritated tissues, polyps or cancer in the large intestine and rectum/ a long flexible tube is inserted into the rectum
CT scan (computed tomography) (abdominal, adrenal, brain, chest, kidney, pelvis)
combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around your body and uses computer processing to create cross sectional images of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body
cystoscopy
a procedure to look inside the bladder using a thin camera called a cystoscope/ inserted in the urethra and passed into the bladder to allow a doctor to see inside
echocardiography
checks how your heart chambers and valves are pumping blood through your heart
EEG (electroencephalogram)
a test that measures electrical activity in the brain using small, metal discs attached to the scalp
EGD (esophagogastroduodonoscopy)
a procedure to diagnose and treat problems in your upper GI tract/ a test to examine the singing of the esophagus, stomach and first part of small intestine
EKG/ECG (electrocardiogram)
records the electrical signals in the heart
EMG (electromyogram)
diagnostic procedure to assess the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them
ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography)
a procedure that combines upper GI endoscopy and X-rays the treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts
holter monitor
a small, wearable device that records the hearts rhythm/ used to detect or determine the risk of irregular heartbeat
IVP (intravenous pyelogram)
an imaging test used to look at the kidneys and ureters
liver biopsy
a procedure to remove a small piece of liver tissue, so it can be examined under a microscope for signs of damage or disease
mammography
specialed medical imaging that uses a low dose X-ray system to see inside the breasts/ aids in early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) open and closed
closed MRI: has a capsule like design where the magnet surrounds the patient/ open MRI: has a magnet top and bottom which allows for an opening on the side
Paracentesis (Peritoneal Fluid Analysis)
done to look at fluid that has built up in the space in the abdomen around the internal organs
Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
a type of nuclear medicine procedure that measures metabolic activity of the cells of body tissues
Stress Test (Exercise and Pharmacologic)
in which cardiovascular stress induced by pharmacologic agents is demonstrated in patients with decreased functional capacity or in patients who cannot exercise/ imaging test used to see how blood flows through to your heart
Thoracentesis /Pleural fluid analysis
a simple bedside procedure that permits fluid to be rapidly sampled, visualized, examined microscopically, and analyzed for chemical, microbiological and cellular content
ultrasound
an imaging test that uses sound waves to create a picture or organs tissues, and other structures inside the body/ does not use radiation
venous doppler, extremity studies
diagnostic test used to check the circulation in the large veins in the legs (or sometimes the arms)/ the exam shows any blockage in the veins by a blood clot or thrombus formation
upper GI series
radiographic x-ray examination of the upper GI tract, made visible on foray film by a liquid suspension
cholangiography
used to clearly view the position of bile ducts during a gallbladder removal or cholecystectomy, or to check and see if there are gallstones in the bile ducts
