What was the problem with the PG initially?

A
  • Dual authority.
  • Tsardom left Russia bankrupt, had to continue war so they could get war credits,

Government crisis:

A
  • 14 March- soviet issued ‘Address to the People of the whole world’, called for ‘peace without annexations of indemnities’. Accepted by PG.
  • Meaningless when they found that Milyukov (foreign minister) had pledged to allies that Russia would not stop fighting until Germany defeated.
  • Violent demonstrations against Milyukov in April. Resigned alongside Guchov, the war minister.

What was the result of the government crisis?

A
  • Kerensky= new war minister, Mensheviks and SRs given places in PG, eased relations with PG, making it mote left.
  • Kadets then joined PG, infuriating Bolsheviks.

Who was Kerensky?

A
  • Campaigned for Russia to embrace conflict with Germany as a struggle to save revolution.
  • Kerensky offensive on south-western front failed however.
  • Made Prime Minister when Lvov stood down. 8th July 1917.
