Reasons to admit a patient?

A
  1. Rule out life threatening diagnosis
    a. Adult – MI, PE, Dissection aneurysm, GI bleed, syncope, coma, altered mental status, DKA
    b. Child – Fever, upper resp distress (croup, asthma)
  2. Poor oral intake: vomiting/dehydration
  3. Need IV medication – failed outpt oral meds
  4. Unstable condition –unstable angina
  5. Social reason
    a. Peds/DCSF – suspect abuse?
    b. No support/can’t change dressings
  6. Psych - Risk to self/others – Suicidal
  7. Treatment not available at home or not readily available
  8. Failure to respond to appropriate outpt regimen
  9. Isolation (TB)
