A
■ Test your hypothesis, what tests/procedures do you need to do to rule things in and out

Reasons to admit a patient?
A
- Rule out life threatening diagnosis
a. Adult – MI, PE, Dissection aneurysm, GI bleed, syncope, coma, altered mental status, DKA
b. Child – Fever, upper resp distress (croup, asthma) - Poor oral intake: vomiting/dehydration
- Need IV medication – failed outpt oral meds
- Unstable condition –unstable angina
- Social reason
a. Peds/DCSF – suspect abuse?
b. No support/can’t change dressings - Psych - Risk to self/others – Suicidal
- Treatment not available at home or not readily available
- Failure to respond to appropriate outpt regimen
- Isolation (TB)
