What is spleen palpable to umbilicus indicative of?
Hematologic pathology
Does anemia cause nose bleeds?
No, but nosebleed can lead to anemia
Exam findings in anemia?
■ Scleral icterus - yellow sclera, seen in hemolysis
■ Spoon nails and pica - signs of iron deficiency anemia
■ Paresthesias (sensation of tickling/pricking) and diarrhea - signs of megaloblastic anemia
■ Smooth tongue/glossitis
What are Spoon nails and pica indicative of?
Signs of iron deficiency anemia
What are Paresthesias/diarrhea indicative of?
Megaloblastic anemia
What are Ecchymoses, hematomas, and hemarthroses indicative of?
Clotting factor dysfunction
What are Petechiae indicative of?
Low platelets or dysfunctional platelets
What do Purpura indicate?
Platelet or clotting factor dysfunction
What does the horizontal lymph drain?
■ Superficial portions of lower abdomen/buttock
■ External genitalia (NOT the testes)
■ Anal and perianal area
■ Lower vagina
What does the Epitrochlear drain?
- Ulnar surface of forearm and hand – little and ring fingers and adjacent surface of middle finger
