Problem 8: Do we need psychology Flashcards
what did hochstein say
both theories depend on each other and will not merge but can also not exist separately
reductionism
the minimisation of reality to a minimal entity (in psychology this means that everything will be reduced to neurological processes)
ontological reductionism
all of reality consists of a minimal number of entities/substances, those that we cannot see do not exist
methodological reductionism
always trying to find the smallest explanation, the best method of research is to study everything at the lowest levels of complexity
what is the nothing buttery perspective
reduction to the core, no need to name water water, we should name it H2O, nothing but h2o
convergence perspective
neuroscience and psychology will integrate:
-an info exchange is beneficial to both fields
-psychology = top-down process
-neuroscience = bottom-up process (neurology to behaviour)
-unification as a result of constant help
criticism on convergence
-psychology cannot rely solely on neuroscience to explain everything
-neurons (low level) cannot explain consciousness (higher level)
-assumptions in one field do not match assumptions in the other
-emotional labels do not align with neuroscience
-would result in loss of explanatory power in psychology
autonomy perspective
neuroscience and psychology will continue to exist independently:
-computationalism (thinking = computing, neuroscience is more concerned with thinking)
-multiple realisability (a problem can be explained by two different methods (psych or neuro))
criticism on autonomy
-neurological mechanism always influence psychology
-multiple realisability possibly resulting in slightly different behaviours
-dependence on each other
