Refers to the impression you make as a person
Logos
Refers to the quality of your arguments
Pathos
Refers to the impression one elicits from the audience
–> the mood you want to cause the listener to be in
ex.: agreement, disagreement w/ opponents
Repetitio
Figure of speech
Repeating a word/phrase a number of times to make it stick with the audience
ex.: “Its not going well, in fact its going badly, really badly”
Anaphora
Figure of speech
Refers to a repetition at the start of a number of sentences
ex.: “I have a dream .. “
The rule of three
Figure of speech
Use of number 3 is recommended
ex.: veni, vidi, vici
Chiasmus
Refer to 2 related sentences that are each others syntactical mirror image
ex.: “Don’t ask what you can do for your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!”
Rhetorical question
Refers to a question which instead of being a real question is a definite statement in the shape of a question
Metaphor
Figure of speech
Refers to a word or phrase which is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable
ex.: Julia is an angel
Tautology

Repeating an obvious quality of an object or concept
ex.: a round circle, we decided to cooperate together

Refers to a more or less appropriate exaggeration

Refers to number of names, facts, arguments following each other up
–> gives each element a convincing ring
Paradox
Refers to an apparent contradiction, that turns out to be true looking closer at it
ex.: Man was born free, but everywhere he is in chains
