privation Flashcards
what is privation
when an attachment has never formed due to a lack of attachment figure
usually due to cases of severe neglect
what are some effects of privation
-unable to form future relationships
-make poor parents
-can become sociopaths (doesn’t develop a conscience, cannot be affectionate , cannot develop relationships)
describe the Genie case study
-genie suffered privation and strapped to a potty ,beat if she made noise and left in total isolation.
-when she was found at 13 she was unable to speak
-she eventually formed attachments with the researcher and learned basic words however she could not exceed mental age of 18 month infant and couldn’t learn grammar
-genie was thought to have mental retardation from birth however this is questioned
does genies research suggest privation can be overcome
to an extent as she was able to form attachments and learn basic words however she was stinted and would never catch up with her peers
evaluate genies research on privation
positive-more ethical as naturally occurring event that would be unethical to replicate so findings on privation are more ethical
+also triangulation as brain scans, langauge assesments and observations were used
negative- genie may have had learning difficulties from birth so not generalisable to other children suffering privation
describe the czech twins case study
discovered at age 6 after being abused by cruel step mother who locked them in a room they were malnourished , poor iq of around 40 and poor language development
does the czech twins case study suggest privation can be overcome
-they were taken in by 2 sisters who provided high quality care
-by 11 they had good speech
-by 14 they had average iq
-by 20 they had stable relationships and ajob
-this shows privation can be overcome with high quality care as they formed future attachments
evaluate czech twins
+longitudinal boys were studied from 6 to over 20=rich data=valid
-boys attached to each-other so not true example of privation so cant be applied
describe freud and dann case study
studied 6 children who survived holocaust from concentration camps they were brought to a clinic in the uk they had intense attachments with eachother e.g if one went to bed they all would and they went onto form attachments with staff at clinic
does this case study argue privation can be overcome (freud and dann)
suggests with high quality care privation can be overcome as only 1 boy sought out future psychological help from a psychiatrist and they did form attachments
evaluate freud and dann
+high eco validity as naturally occurring case so childrens reactions and behaviour is genuine so high validity
-very unique case that cant be replicated=low reliability
describe rutters case study
studied children in romanian children in institution those who had spent over 6 months in the orphanage had more attachment issues than those who left before 6 months
does rutter suggest privation can be overcome
privation cannot be overcome over a certain amount of time
evaluate rutter
+in depth rich data =valid
+more ethical naturally occuring
-romanian orphanage hard to replicate due to high staff turnover ect this has low temporal validity as orphanages are no longer like this
