Q

explain why education opportunities makes prisons effective

A
  • People in prison can develop new skills, broaden their knowledge and foster a sense of personal achievement. This opens more job opportunities post release as they will have more skills. This reduces the likelihood of them reoffending
  • Fife College delivers qualifications and courses to all 13 public prisons in Scotland, this allows prisoners to gain qualifications to support them post release

Q

explain why rehabilitation programs make prisons effective

A
  • It allows offenders time and opportunities to address the reasons why they committed the crime. Prisoners can use prison facilities such as gyms, counselling, education rooms and employment training programmes so offenders are able to overcome some of their problems such as lock of skills or addictions so that they become less likely to commit crimes in the future
  • HMP Barlinnie set up a community hub a few years ago. The Hub offers books, counselling services and education as well as advice on day to day issues such as opening a bank account.

  • Prions are a form of punishment for those who have committed crimes as it deprives them of their freedom and takes them away from their families.
  • Many believe that this stops criminals from reoffending as they do not want to end up back in prison
  • The reconviction rate, of offenders who reoffend within a year, was 26.9% in 2020-21.
