Impact of crime on communities Flashcards
low property value
If an area has a high crime rate it is likely property values in the area will decrease. This can be a problem for home owners as if they manage to sell their house it will be for a significantly lower price than what they bought it for so will lose a lot of money and may struggle to afford a property in a safer area with low levels of crime.
example of low property value
The 2018 UK House Price Index showed 83% of areas in England where reported crimes rose, saw house values decrease
businesses selling things for a higher price
Crimes such as theft which affects businesses costs them thousands of pounds to replace and/or recover their losses. To make up for this loss they will often increase the price of what they are selling which affects the customers in the area.
