Principles of Sx - Onco Flashcards
1
Q
“Cut big, cut wide, cut deep, live forever”
A
SJ Withrow
2
Q
4 “doses” of surgery
A
- intracapsular
- marginal
- wide
- radical
3
Q
3 therapeutic goals when removing a malignant tumor
A
- curative: goal is to remove the entire tumor locally; aka definitive sx
- palliative: goal is to make patient comfortable (inc QOL).. not a cure
- cytoreductive: goal is to “downstage” the disease… decrease tumor burden and therefore enhance response to an adjuvant therapy (e.g. radiation therapy). Classic example is amputation without chemotherapy for OSA in dogs
4
Q
The therapeutic goal dictates the dose of sx
A
- curative –> wide or radical
- palliative –> intracapsular or marginal
- cytoreductive –> intracapsular or marginal
5
Q
TLC - approaching the onco patient
A
T: tumor type
- know who the enemy is
L: location
- stage the patient
C: condition of patient
- overall health status
