3 therapeutic goals when removing a malignant tumor

A
  • curative: goal is to remove the entire tumor locally; aka definitive sx
  • palliative: goal is to make patient comfortable (inc QOL).. not a cure
  • cytoreductive: goal is to “downstage” the disease… decrease tumor burden and therefore enhance response to an adjuvant therapy (e.g. radiation therapy). Classic example is amputation without chemotherapy for OSA in dogs
