Principle of Design Flashcards
What scale do we use for proportion in the garden?
Relative to Humans
In proportion to you, what feature in your backyard asserts dominance and what brings comfort? Why?
The mesquite tree in my back yard towers over me, has a coarse canopy, and has a vase like form that makes it the dominate feature.
darker rock is laid out across the yard which is smaller, and has familiar color that not overwhelming
How does symmetrical balance achieve order in the backyard?
It evenly distributes space along a central axis creating a simpler design.
What part of you garden should be dominate to achieve perspective balance?
Foreground or background by using features containing coarse, tall, complex forms, with Complementary colors.
How can you keep a pattern from getting boring?
Modulate the pattern… ex: vase shape -> Pyramid shape -> vase shape -> Pyramid shape
How can you create unity in your garden?
Make sure the focal point contrasts well with adjacent objects (Dominance), elements/features physically link to each other to tell a story (interconnection), group elements into odd numbers with staggered variation (Three), avoid clutter and chaos by keeping things simple (Simplicity).. = UNITY!
What is the best way to apply these design principles to your garden?
Sample! Find the stuff you like, figure out what you like/hate about it, and toss it into your design.
In what order should garden plan be developed?
Scale Drawings, Bubble Diagram, Final Plan
What will a scale drawing help you with?
A scaled map of my home and land that ill lay the foundation to plan the landscape around. “The plants are constrained by the plans”
What type of theme do you want in your garden?
Open ended
What are some intended uses for the front patio, living room patio, and Master bedroom patio?
Open Ended
Why is it called a bubble diagram?
You cut out bubbles containing desirable feature that you can move around your scale drawing
What is an important tool to include on your final plan? Why?
A legend will help keep track of what colors and symbols mean on your final blue print.
