what does managers do?
act of behalf for the organisation
set objectives for the organisation
make sure that a business achieves its objectives by managing others
ensure that coporate vaules are maintained in dealings with other businesses, customers, employees and general public
what is a management style?
the way in which managers deal with their employees is known as their managment style
what are the differemt types of managment styles?
autocratic/ autoritarian
democratic
paternalistic
laissez
what is an authoritian?
they tell employees what to do and do not listen to what workers themselves have to say. they tend to use one way, top down communication as they give orders to workers and dont want much feedback
advantages of autocratic
employees work better with structure in their working life
everything is organisaed in times of crisis
easier to keep track that everything is done correctly to ensure no mistakes made
disadvantages of autocratic
mistakes by subordinates can be met by criticism and disiplinary action, therefore they will tend to avoid decisions and therefore senior managers make decisions and can be overworked as a result
no two-way communication so can be de-motivating
staff turnover can be high
creates a “them and us” attitude between managers and workers
very lttle flexiability
what is a democratic leadership?
they like to involve their workers in decisions. they tend to listen to employees ideas and ensure people contribute to the discussion
how are decisions made with a democratic leader?
decisions are based on the majority view
the leader delegates and encourages leadership skills in subordinates
employee participation is greatly encouraged
managers acts upon advice and explains reasons for decisions
advantages of democratic
employees can gain great job satisfaction and therefore motivation and hence little supervision is needed
delegates decision making- authority is delegated to workers which is motivating
listen to ideas
useful when complex decisions are required that need specialist skills
disadvantages of democratic
leader has little input into day to day decision-making
often critised for resting in poor role definition for managers
can be time consuming
managerial control may be lost
what is a paternalistic?
they believe employees need direction but think it is important that they are supported and ared for properly. they are interested in the security and social needs of the staff
advantages of paternalistic
feeback is invited, thus improving in morale
typical paternalistic leader explains the specific reason as to why he has taken certain actions
overall staff turnover and absenteeism rates shold decrease
decisions take employees best interest into account
disadvantages of paternalistic
increasing dependancy of employees on the leader leading to more supervision required
dissatuisfaction in employees if bad decisions are made
there is little delegation
