primary biliary and co Flashcards
Cholestasis
Inflammation of the bile duct caused by the build up of hepatocytes
What are the causes of Cholestasis?
- Drug use
- Viral hepatitis/alcoholic hepatitis
- Liver failure
Primary biliary cholangitis
- Autoimmune disease which occurs primarily in women.
- Acts upon auto-mitochondrial proteins.
- Environmental trigger plays on genetic susceptibility.
Main investigation for primary biliary cholangitis?
Increased serum amylase
How does primary biliary cholangitis develop?
1-Chronic granulomatous inflammation
2-Loss of intra-hepatic bile ducts
3-Cirrhosis
Primary sclerosis cholangitis
-Chronic inflammation of the bile ducts
Investigations for primary sclerosing cholangitis?
- pANCA
- MRCP
What conditions are associated with Primary scelrosing cholangitis
- IBD
- cholangiocarcinoma
Treatment for PSC?
Biliary stents
Liver transplant
Common diseases of the gallbladder?
Cholelithiasis
Cholesterosis (cholesterol in lining of gallbladder wall
GB polyps
Benign biliary tract disease- congenital?
Congenital:
- Biliary atresia: flow of bile from liver to gallbladder is inhibited
- Cholechondral cysts: abnormal dilation of bile ducts which leads to the retention of bile
Benign biliary tract disease stricture?
- Iatrogenic
- Gallstone related
- Inflammatory (can lead to PSC, HIV, Pancreatitis )
